The amazing story of Roman Mirga, a Polish gypsy who survived Auschwitz & WWII who knew the experience of Gypsys at the hands of the Nazis needed to be told. Once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. Written from Roman's own diary, his experience & that of his family's 'clan/tribe' (the kumpania) was fascinating but ultimately a little distressing knowing the eventual fate of all those sent to the death camps (& the history of the Holocaust in general), even though my heart was barracking for a different outcome. There is also an interesting connection to an infamous nazi & through this the reader is able to learn more about what was also going on in the camp & the attitudes of the SS/Nazi regime. Roman's survival is particularly remarkable and his story is as riveting as it is sad with the exception being that miracles can (& do) still occur even in the midst of war, murder, mayhem & genocide. The book was littered with examples of the way of life for Polish (Lowland - Brest Litovsk) Gypsys & their belief systems. This was especially evident in their connection to & respect for nature, including their extensive knowledge of the seasons & how to live off the land. This offered great insight to a culture where few live in large Kumpania's anymore, with their beloved horses in caravans, like in the 'old way' these days, compared to how they were in Europe prior to the arrival of the Nazis. The full cost of what was lost to the Gypsy culture in terms of traditions & knowledge, language & trade/artistic skills etc, may never fully be known other than what was lost personally in each family group. That alone is a good enough reason to read this book (to capture it) however, I'd recommend it as a gteat read that isn't as depressing as you'd think. It left me contemplating my own lucky circumstances (thus far) for long after I finished ...

As great a book as I remember.
This book was an exceptionally good read, I was drawn into it for the longest time! It is well written and I would definitely recommend it. The story is so touching and sad, especially because the occurrences are true.
Very touching and interesting.
An easy read about some horrible times. I'd heard about this book and was very very glad to have found it. A gripping first person account of heartbreaking experiences.
i loved the book so much, i looked to see if the author actually made the movie about it that the coverjacket he talked about.
i found that the movie WAS made- and it was almost as amazing as the book!

This true life story of what happened to the gypies in Eastern Europe during the Holocaust of WW2, brings the past alive. And the world needs to know what happened, so that it will not be repeated!
A sad but compelling story that we should never forget - World War II atrocities.
very fast shipping and great quality we will return thank you
