I first read this book back when it was still young and I loved it so very much. I instantly became a fan. After rereading it I realized that I don’t just love it I ABSOLUTELY love it. It’s one of the best romances I’ve ever read and will ride the top of my favorites list forever. The dynamics between Cam and Paige is exactly what I look for in every book I pick up. I want the spark that can look like antagonism but that only the reader recognizes as chemistry. I hunger for protectiveness from the hero, throw in a bit of jealousy and I’m a very happy girl. I love heroines who are feisty and independent but not so much they can’t show their vulnerable side and with Paige I also saw all her “sweet” and in the seeing, I fell in love with Cam Montgomery all over again.
Athica Lane is written in a style that feels as though your best friend is sharing their story and before you know it, you’re curled up, comfortable and at home with the characters and experiencing all their highs as well as all their heartbreaking lows. The angst, when present made my heart hurt as Cam and Paige struggle individually over the situation they find themselves in relationship wise. But when the resolution arrived, and then another fuller resolution, I found myself shedding happy tears for this couple. They are absolutely perfect together.
While this is a longer book than most romances that make the rounds these days, it never drags or becomes repetitive and I never, ever wanted to miss a word so skimming wasn’t a thought in my head. There is drama outside the relationship that keeps not only the characters but the readers on their toes and I loved how this author gave closure to it in the end. We have secondary characters from the previous book as well as new characters I know we’ll see in the future and some I hope to see. They are never used as filler but they are constantly supporting the main characters as well as helping to move the story along even as they often add humor, in addition to that which is found between Paige and Cam.
All of that to say, this my friends, is what romance is all about. It’s the beginning, the middle and the happy ever after with an epilogue that leaves you with a smile and the surety that this couple are going to be alright…forever.

Athica Lane The Carpino Series edition by Brynne Asher Romance eBooks Reviews
One of my favorite things about Brynne Asher as a writer is the way she writes her women. Sure the men are definitely worth a mention all of them are incredible. But I like that her women are intelligent and confident and strong.
I realize there’s got to be a certain amount of conflict in a story just so we can see the characters face the challenge, rise or fall and face the consequences of their choices. But sometimes in some stories it’s like the drama that just never ends....should I? Shouldn’t I? I can’t, he won’t, he can’t, yada yada yada.... To the point I want to say go home get it together women you are making me crazy.
So...here we have Paige. I like Paige she’s spunky and smart and a smart ass she’s talented and she’s determined to make her way and stand on her own two feet. Which I can really respect. Her family which seems to be a blessing and a curse at times is one of her strengths that make Paige the woman she is.
But I’m not going to lie I got angry with her in this story. First Cam Montgomery starts off as kind of a jerk. Well no, let’s be honest there’s no kind of. Whether she ran into him or him into her it was an accident and you say your sorry or excuse me. It’s just polite. But then he continues to be said jerk when he realizes the next day that Paige is the woman who’s going to be helping him out with his kids for the next week. At this point he could have been decent but again he acts like a jackass.
But even so I liked how she handles it. She doesn’t let him get to her. She’s just unapologetically herself and decides to rally for the kids benefit and put Cams grumpy aside for them.
As time moves on Cam shows Paige he’s not just the grouch she’s seen him display to her but a very loving and good father to his children. A side that’s very attractive to her. And Cam even though he doesn’t want to be can’t deny that he finds Paige very interesting and attractive. When he sees how his kids react to her and her to them he’s even more intrigued and a little annoyed. Because it’s pretty clear he does not want to like Paige at all.
Long story short then eventually stop fighting the attraction and start to give into it.....until Cam learns that Paige has zero sexual experience. And then he pulls back, gets mad and leaves!!! Yes the jackassery of it made me want to kick him in the knee myself! Dude really? Paige as you can imagine is devastated and embarrassed and feeling humiliated. So she automatically thinks it’s me, he’s a grown man and he doesn’t want some 26 year old who knows nothing.
Fast forward....Cam pulls his head out of...well he comes to his senses when he realizes that the pull to Paige isn’t something he can ignore and he decides what the heck I’ll go for it and make her mine. At this point I’m thinking ok Cam you got a second chance this girls a catch don’t screw it up.... And everything is going amazing. They are both happy, the kids are thriving and falling more in love with Paige every day. He takes her to meet his family in Texas. Big step right? Everything’s mashed potatoes and gravy until Cam makes a comment while taking care of his sisters new baby.... he says he’s glad he’ll never have to do the baby stuff ever again.
BAM.... we just hit a brick wall. Paige is 26. Comes from a huge family. Of course she wants children. She’s so incredible with his kids how could he not think she wouldn’t want her own someday?
This turns into a deal breaker. I can’t fault Paige as much as she loved him and his kids she wanted her own. And wasn’t willing to give that dream up. And I can even respect Cam for knowing his own mind and not wanting more. Although his reasons were fear based I can still understand them.
But here’s what gets me mad.....after he makes it clear by his lack of denial that he doesn’t want any more children and Paige leaves devastated and heartbroken to go and do what anyone might when they loose the person they had hoped would be their forever. He doesn’t leave her a lone .....he looks for her. Hounds her. Gets her family all stired up when she wanted a private moment to grieve her loss. And when he finally gets everyone all in her business and locates her...what does he do? He says I never should have perused you. I was selfish. I should have left you a lone to find a nice guy to give you everything you want and need? Really?
I wanted to kick him a second time at this point. I mean common you don’t think she was smart enough to figure all that out from your response during the first talk? You don’t think that her disappearance after you spoke and not answering your texts or calls wasn’t a clue she knew where things were? Give this grown woman some credit. But no, you had to give her your speech and leave her broken one more time. What a jack-wagon!
I guess where Paige got me irritated was that she just keeps letting Cam burst back in each time he can’t handle his own choices. I wanted to say Paige don’t let this guy twist you in knots...AGAIN! But I get it. She loved him. She had hope. She wanted it to work no matter how slim the odds.
This while long winded (sorry I rant) is only the tip of the iceberg. There’s a creepy stalker, an ex wife from hell and more family drama. Read this one. You won’t be sorry. Just be prepared. 😊
