Okay, I know I can be a little harsh with my reviews sometimes, but I just really did not like this book. I read the entire thing hoping that there would some spark of something like romance, but there just never was. I really, really don't get the good reviews at all.

Here's why. The "Hero," John, kidnaps the heroine, Muriella, so he can marry her for her fortune. Even though Muriella is thirteen years old, wounded, tired, hungry, scared, etc., John does nothing to reassure her or reach out to her at all. When he isn't ignoring her entirely, he is telling her how very much he does not want her. Fast forward to the wedding night, Muriella's fourteenth birthday, and, after ignoring her all night long, John goes to her chamber drunk and rapes her. Happy freakin' wedding night, Muriella.

The story then fast forwards through a number of years wherein John seems to alternate between ignoring his bride and taking her against her will. Then he finally gets tired, I guess, of her frigidity and leaves her alone after she turns 16. It isn't until two years later, when Muriella finds John sexing it up with a servant girl that she starts to feel affection for him and decides she wants him.

Truly, Muriella is a nut job. She doesn't stand up for herself, and she acts like a crazy person all of the time. John is nothing but a big jerk with a violent temper and really nothing to draw the reader to him. I kept reading because, as bad as things were between these characters, I just couldn't see how the writer was going to pull off an actual romance between them. The answer is that there never was any. There was just a belated version of pathetic insta-love. What a disappointment. I wish I could have back the time I invested in this book.

This could have been a much better story. As another reviewer wrote, the two main characters, Muriella and John, were neither sympathetic nor likable. What got to be really, really tedious is that on nearly every page, the words "rage" and "fear" were used; and if not that, then "anger" and "fury". I almost abandoned the book several times, but I kept thinking it would get better; it wasn't until 80% of the way through it did the story finally start making sense. Good thing it was a free book; I would have considered it a waste of money otherwise.
This story is about Muriella Calder, a child born to inherit a great fortune. She is being hunted by everyone. Some want to marry her off and others want to kill her off. I liked this book. The flow was well done and kept you reading.

This book has mystery, action, love, tears and so much more. You grow up with Muriella, and feel her as she goes through everything that has happened to her. John Campbell the second son of the Earl is betrothed to the young lady and is a reluctant as she is with the marriage but for different reasons. You really need to read this book. I believe you will like it as much as I did.
Wow! Thank you Kathryn Lynn Davis. You have, again, done a magnificent job. It may have taken you 20 years to permit the world to enjoy and love your first written child but I, for one, am grateful you have shared " her " with us. What a great story and the characters are wonderfully real. Thank you.
It's interesting how my view of this book after the second read is so different from the first time I read this book. The characters have matured with me. I am in "awe" that they can withstand the changes in me as I have matured. Thank you so much for creating these wonderful characters who have lived within me. Please read this book more than once. Perhaps you will discover the Scottish lass inside you.
This book was very heavy, lots of characters, lots of details. Muriella's visions were sometimes confusing but other times made her sound like she had a mental illness. Although I realize life was difficult during this period, especially for women, the story was really depressing. Constant fighting between clans and political maneuvering got to be boring and made it drag quite a bit. The marriage between Muriella and John lacked emotion until the very end.

I would have classified this as historical fiction with romance. I appreciated the historical accuracy and the fact some of the characters were based on real people.
Well, well, a historical quote unquote romance that is more historical than romance. I love it! I don't mind if there is a romance in the story, I just don't want the story to be the romance. The author paints a truly beautiful picture of the ancient Scottish Highlands. It's wild, breathtaking and often dangerous beauty. The characters are well formed, and the story has not only history but intrigue and action and a bit of the metaphysical. I also loved that the sex scenes were few and far between and rather tastefully done. Don't get me wrong, I'm am NOT a prude, but I've been married over thirty one years, I know what people do in bed and I don't want or need all the sweaty details. For me that's just boring and one giant snore. So if that's your kind of romance novel, this one isn't for you. However, if you like a good historical story, in a beautiful setting with a complicated love story thrown in, this is your book. I really enjoyed it.
I was quite far into the book when I realized that this was a true story as I had stood in Cawdor Castle and had bits of the story told to me by one of the caretakers. I had looked at the carpeting and wondered why the Campbell tartans had covered many parts of the floor. The Castle is located in the Highlands near Inverness and Culloden (the battle of 1745 as described in the Outlander series) which is definitely not Campbell territory. They were despised in the Highlands and still to this day there are many that still dislike them.

I really enjoyed this book as the history was so appealing and true. She was kidnapped and married off to the Earl's son. To this day the Castle is owned by a descendent of Muriella and John's. I do realize that liberties were no doubt taken in the telling of the story but it was done with class. Bravo Ms Davies for taking this part of history and making it real.
